What is Planned Giving?
Most goods if not made to benefit within a certain time-frame starts to get rotten. Human lives come with a definite time stamp. Similarly our assets according to Jesus have the tendency to 1) rot, 2) rust 3)broken in 4) stolen. The good news is you don’t have to give away all your hard earned assets all at once to charity to make a kingdom impact. Unlike kiva where they only accept credit/bank payments InvestinK narrows down the marketplace model to Kingdom projects and also includes planned giving vehicles.
How does Donor-Advised Funds differ from Private Foundations?
Private foundations have to make distributions to regular charities. Private foundations are required to distribute 5 percent of their assets each year and these distributions typically go to operating charities. However, according to current tax rules, contributions to donor-advised funds qualify as required distributions for private foundations. This means that a private foundation can meet its payout requirement by giving funds to a DAF, which itself has no payout requirement. There is 30% limitation for gifts to a private foundation while DAFs have none.
What are Donor-Advised Funds?
A donor advised funds is beneficial when a donor who is charitable has a lot of long term charitable goals for small charities that don’t have the infrastructure to handle relatively large donations prudently. In such cases the donor can give to his or her target charities to be spread over a few years. There are limitations setting up a private foundation. There is 30% limitation for gifts to a private foundation and cannot deduct the whole amount wanting to donate. While a donor advised fund is a program run by an entity that is classified as a public charity. The donation you make to the organization keeps the assets you donate in a separate fund. Then the donor can make donor advice, which qualified charities should receive donations. Donor-Advised Funds also provide anonymity as some Christians follow “Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.” rule. What are Charitable Remainder Trusts?
A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) is a type of trust that lets you set up an income stream for you and your beneficiaries and then give the remainder to a charity. CRT is a gift of cash or other property to an irrevocable trust. The donor receives an income stream from the trust for a term of years or for life and the named charity receives the remaining trust assets at the end of the trust term. The donor receives an immediate income tax charitable deduction when the CRT is funded based on the present value of the assets.
